FWNK by NKUSI & Funkywhat

By Seb Salois

If there’s one thing we believe in, it’s the importance to support art and culture.

Via our platforms, we proudly showcase and promote artists that emulate our values and that in their own ways, run the town.

Today we got a special one for you, the new FWNK EP.

The project is produced by NKUSI and Funkywhat in collaboration with singer Kaya Hoax and rapper Mori$$ Regal.

NKUSI, who I’ve had the chance to know for years from our bball days, is a Montreal-Rwandan producer who grew up in Trois-Rivières. In 2019, he was discovered with his first EP Gutengiza and the production of the song Heal which traveled across Quebec thanks to a collaboration with the Cultural Factory. It was also one of the Ten best local beats tapes of 2019 according to HHQC.

Funkywhat first hit the Montreal scene in 2018 when he produced the debut EP OMW to the Listening Party by Montreal neo-soul singer Magi Merlin. Working mainly in Soul and RnB, he creates a unique style for himself by remixing acapellas from popular artists (Drake, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, etc.) then juxtaposed with his own productions.

His beat tape Off Days was also among the Top Ten Local Beat Tapes of 2019 according to HHQC. His collaboration with NKUSI on FWNK solidifies his musical identity, a mix of old school hip-hop with elements of Funk, Soul and RnB.

My greatest pride in this project is to have managed to create a sound that is assumed, that represents us and that is unique.
