Listen to Mellow Happy here:

Cherry Lena is a Pop and R&B singer-songwriter from Montreal. After her remarkable performance at La Voix in 2018, she launched several singles revealing a strong and unique signature.

Her adaptation of Feeling Good by Nina Simone, in collaboration with Apashe, has so far garnered more than five million views on Youtube. Three months after the release of her latest single “Down”, she presents “Mellow Happy ”a sweet and honeyed Pop song.

Behind the lyrics

“Mellow Happy” is a serene state of mind. It’s to be calm in the face of the unknown, the future, whatever is out of control. It’s an inexplicable certainty that everything will be fine well, that everything will pass and eventually blossom towards its destiny. Be fearless in the face of time passing and which fades everything in its path. To be Free from all worries for a moment.

What first got you into music?

Cherry Lena: I’ve been passionate about music and dreaming of becoming a singer for as long as I can remember. At about 7 years old I started singing lessons, and I kept on going until Cegep, where I studied music & pop/Jazz singing. After that, all I needed was the confidence to put myself out into the world and go after my dream, which i’ve been doing for the past 3 years.

What’s something people seem to misunderstand about you?

Cherry Lena: That I’m the confident, strong one. I feel like people often assume that about me. I have to admit, I understand why since it’s part of me to be. But going through moments of introspection, self doubt and reflecting is just as much part of me too.

To me, it is mandatory in order to grow and learn as a human to question yourself. I might be one of the most sensitive and emotional people I know. Sometimes, too much for my own good…but I won’t go and show my vulnerable side to just anyone.

If you could have a billboard with anything on it, what would it be or say and why?

Cherry Lena: Go vegan and buy my mixtape!

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Cherry Lena: Ariana Grande.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your life?

Cherry Lena: So many things. I’m not sure I can break it down to just one single thing. Everyday is a new learning experience and looking back at even just a few years past now, I feel like I’ve grown so much already.

But one of the main things would definitely be learning to let go of the past, of the people that hurt me, of negative past experience and mistakes. Learning to accept the past with its flaws is so important, although it’s a constant process. Without adversity, there is no growth.

What is the best compliment you can receive as an artist?

Cherry Lena: Someone telling me my music has impacted them positively in some sort of way. whether it’s a stranger on instagram, a friend, anyone. It just feels really good to hear. As artists we are very focused and spend a lot of time, energy and money to give our dreams a shot.

So, for me, hearing these words is such a big reward. It’s the reason I’m doing this.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be and why?

Cherry Lena: Honestly, it would definitely be how little artists are paid per plays on streaming platforms.

What do you feel most grateful for in your life?

Cherry Lena: My friends and family, music, having a purpose, my cat, late night deep conversations, popcorns.

What’s next for you ?

Cherry Lena: I’m planning the release of another single right in time for spring. Can’t wait to share it with the world!

PS

Shoutout and much love to Clara Landry who manages Cherry Lena and NKUSI amongst others. She perfectly represents one of the many definitions of running the town. She links up, she reaches out, makes connections and creates opportunities for herself and her people. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. Keep running the town Clara!
